Botanical Name: Pedalium Murex Plant part used: Fruit and
root. It is a creeper that is about 2 to 3 feet long having branches spread all over, leaves are in pairs of 5 to 8 and is of irregular shape. Flowers are small and yellow colored. Fruits are round and possess 5 to 12 compartments and each compartment contains a seed. The seeds contain aromatic oil. Roots are 4 to 5 inch long, brown in color and bear a sweet aroma. The plant flowers in early winters followed by fruiting.

Chemical Constituents: The fruit contains certain alkaloids, 3.5 to 5 % stable oil, aromatic oil, resins, tannins, glycosides, sterol and some nitrates. The stem contains herman and seeds contains an alkaloid Harmine and also possesses some seponins. Pharmacology: It is vata and pitta suppressant. It helps in suppressing pain and inflammation due to its sweet taste. It also provides strength to the body due to presence of slimy properties and sweet taste. It also has a good effect on the respiratory and digestive system. It is a good aphrodisiac agent. It is a diuretic agent According to ayurveda it contains Gunna (properties) – guru (heavy), snigdh (slimy) Rasa (taste) – madhur (sweet) Virya (potency) – sheet (cold)
